North Grape Farm
North Grape Farm, located in Aso, Kumamoto, is a sightseeing farm that specializes in grapes. The farm cultivates over 20 varieties of grapes.
The farm uses clean Aso groundwater and is characterized by cultivating their grapes with low amounts of pesticides. The grapes are maintained in accordance to their respective varieties to draw out the deliciousness of the fruit. The farm is free to enter and goes by a system where you only pay for the amount that is harvested. You can even enjoy grape picking on rainy days due to the grapes being cultivated in greenhouses.
Highly recommended at the farm are Yuho grapes, which can be harvested from the middle of September to the beginning of October. It is an unusual variety that rarely appears in the market, even in Japan, and ripens into an extra-large fruit with a beautiful yellow-green color.
Mr. Kita, who manages the farm, said, “As we grow various kinds of grapes, maintaining the farm is tough, but it encourages me when I hear compliments from customers such as ‘It’s very good,’ and ‘I won’t be able to eat other grapes anymore.’”
Grape products are also sold at the farm. Grape jam, homemade raisin, fresh juice made from fresh whole grapes, and grape soft serve ice cream are popular items.
Due to the 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes, the Aso region suffered enormous damage. Mr. Kita commented in hopes of an increase in Aso visitors, “Aso is a wonderful sightseeing location. I definitely would like if you come to visit.”
