Just a 15 minute drive from Toyako Onsen will bring you to Fruit Farm Hamada Orchard, in Usu-gun, Hokkaido. This sightseeing farm cultivates more than 10 kinds of fruit, including strawberries, cherries, grapes, and apples, and is a popular spot with tourists from around the world.

From June to November all kinds of fruits can be eaten at the farm, with course fees for junior high school students and above at 880 yen, elementary school students at 680 yen, and infants 4 years and over at only 480 yen. And if you’d like to have your fruits to-go, you can pay a separate charge for them.

One fruit that comes highly recommended here is the cherry. They cultivate 20 different types of cherries; from the representative sato nishiki cherry, to benishuho and suimon cherries too.

Fruit Farm Hamada Orchard covers a massive 3 hectares, and by taking advantage of this space, planted its trees with plenty of space between them – which allows each tree to fully take in the sunshine, and makes for some delicious, sweet cherries. In addition, they have put extra effort into their soil quality when it comes to cultivating fruit in particular, not only do they use safe chemical fertilizers, but a secret blend of compost too.

Fruits raised in the special soil of Hokkaido differ in both coloring and taste to those grown in other parts of Japan. This is thanks to the drastic temperature differences between day and night in Hokkaido. Please come and enjoy fresh fruits from Hokkaido, which differ greatly from those lining the shelves of Tokyo’s supermarkets!

In addition to fruit picking, at Fruit Farm Hamada Orchard, you can also purchase Hokkaido’s famous grilled lamb dish, genghis khan, as well as cakes, apple pies, jams and juices made from fruits grown in their orchards. While visiting the Toyako Onsen area, why not stop and enjoy some tasty seasonal fruits at Hamada Orchard?
