Lion Orchard is located in Chikuzen-machi, and it takes about fifty minutes by car from from Fukuoka City to reach it. It is one of the largest strawberry orchards in the Kyushu Region. There are 21 greenhouses, and visitors can choose from nine types of strawberries, including Ama-oh, a special product of Fukuoka Prefecture.
At this orchard they use only organic fertilizers and groundwater, which greatly influences the taste of the strawberries. The staff went through trial and error every season, and perfected the taste. Mr. Iino, the orchard representative, said, “The taste changes every season. You should try every type, and find your favorite. Be sure to save Ama-oh for last, as it is the sweetest.”
Besides strawberry picking, the orchard also offers jam-making and crepe-making workshops, which are both popular to the children. This is a place where all the family members can have fun.
Visitors from abroad are always welcome, as there are English signboards and pamphlets. Also, the staff can speak a little English, and they are ready to communicate using gestures. The orchard employs a kosetu saibai (*1) system, so the visitors can pick the strawberries without crouching.
*1: This is a system where the trellis for the strawberries are raised high.
Reservations are required for the morning hour pickings, and the afternoon hour picking stops as soon as the strawberries are all gone. If you are planning a visit, it would be better to make a reservation on the orchard’s website.
Dazaifu Tenmangu, a famous sightseeing spot, is located nearby, so visitors can also enjoy some of Fukuoka’s charms as well.
